EXTRADITION

Extradition Proceedings - Habeas Corpus Relief Granted

Extradition proceedings were initiated in Malaysia against an Iranian national following a request by authorities in the United States. The request related to alleged offences including violations of United States trade and embargo laws and related federal offences.

The matter was brought before the Malaysian courts, where issues arose concerning the legality and procedure of the extradition process. The High Court allowed a habeas corpus application and set aside the extradition order, finding procedural deficiencies in the manner in which the extradition proceedings had been conducted. The court ordered the release of the individual. Subsequent actions by immigration authorities were also the subject of legal challenge.

The individual concerned was Sajad Farhadi. The case attracted international attention due to its cross-border implications and the involvement of United States enforcement authorities.
