High Court Finds Media Publications Defamatory

Jason Lo Wins RM200,000 Defamation Judgment Against Star Media Group

The Shah Alam High Court ruled in favour of Malaysian singer and entrepreneur Jason Jonathan Lo in a defamation lawsuit against Star Media Group Berhad and three of its employees arising from articles published in 2019.

The Court found that the impugned publications referred to Lo and conveyed defamatory meanings that damaged his reputation. The defendants were unable to establish their defences, including justification and qualified privilege. The Court also found that the publications exceeded the boundaries of responsible journalism.

The High Court awarded RM200,000 in general damages to Lo together with RM40,000 in legal costs.The case formed part of broader proceedings initiated by Lo in response to media reports concerning allegations made against him.
