Representation of a businessman accused of involvement in allegations arising from Operation Car Wash (Operação Lava Jato), a wide-ranging global corruption investigation involving eleven countries. Originating in Brazil, the investigation examined alleged bribery, procurement fraud, and financial misconduct allegedly connected to major public infrastructure contracts and state-linked entities.
The matter concerned allegations that an intermediary had facilitated communications between a corporate entity awarded infrastructure projects and a senior public office-holder in Brazil. The proceedings formed part of the broader Operation Car Wash investigations, which generated extensive international scrutiny and involved multiple jurisdictions, financial institutions, and law-enforcement agencies.
The accused was represented by Tania Scivetti as defence counsel.
The case formed part of the wider corruption investigations that led to the conviction of former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a decision later annulled by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court on grounds including judicial bias, lack of jurisdiction, and prosecutorial interference. President Lula has since returned to office following his re-election as President of Brazil.
Operation Car Wash became one of the most widely reported corruption investigations in modern political history, generating sustained international media attention and public debate. Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was charged with corruption and money-laundering offences and was convicted by the 13th Federal Criminal Court in Curitiba, a decision later affirmed by the Regional Federal Court. The convictions resulted in a period of imprisonment and significant political consequences. Subsequent developments, including investigative reporting based on leaked communications between members of the prosecution task force and the presiding judge, raised questions concerning judicial impartiality and the conduct of the proceedings. In 2021, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court annulled the convictions on grounds including lack of jurisdiction and judicial bias, restoring Mr Lula’s political rights. He later returned to public office following his re-election as President of Brazil.
