Challenge to Appointment of Deputy Speaker and Secretary of the House of Representatives (Malaysia)

Proceedings were initiated in Malaysia challenging the validity of the appointments of the Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives), Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, and the Secretary of the Dewan Rakyat, Dr Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin. The action was brought by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his capacity as Prime Minister, raising issues under the Federal Constitution concerning the legality of the appointments.

The matter was heard before the High Court, which struck out the action in its entirety, holding that the appointments were valid and that the issues raised were not justiciable.
