Sepang Formula One 'Budgie Nine' Case

Internationally Reported Public Order Prosecution

Nine Australian nationals were charged in Malaysia following an incident at the Sepang International Circuit during the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix. The individuals briefly removed outer clothing to reveal Australian-flag themed swimwear in a public area of the circuit, conduct which was alleged to amount to indecent behaviour in a public place under Malaysian law.

The matter attracted significant international media attention. The court ultimately disposed of the case without custodial sentences, and the individuals were permitted to return to Australia.
